A recent correspondent has brought this allegedly Truro-born artist to our attention (2012). In approximately 2000, the enquirer and his wife purchased an original painting at the Porthminster Gallery, St Ives, signed by John Edwards of St Ives Harbour and the harbour wall. The following year, they purchased another from the same gallery, being a long distance view of St Michael's Mount and the village of Marazion. The gallery was able to provide the information that the artist was self-trained and born in Truro in 1914.
In 2011, two Cornish paintings (landscape, one of a view of St Michael's Mount) were offered for sale by David Lay in his local/national art auctions, and earlier this year another signed original oil on board painting of the Cornish Countryside was offered on Ebay auctions as by the 'St Ives Artist John Edwards'. In the short description accompanying this painting, the owner revealed that John was married to another local artist, Stella Mary EDWARDS (aka Yram Allets). The painting is given a date of c1960s-1980s.
This entry is placed with the hope of learning more about this artist. Information gratefully received.
John Watson, current chairman of STISA writes: 'I have some information on John Edwards. He was indeed the husband of Stella Mary Edwards (Yram Allets). The first mention of Allets in our catalogues is spring 1959 & her address is given as Tedburn St Mary (Devon). John is not mentioned. John is mentioned as a member in spring 1960's catalogue with his address at the same place in Devon (Pathfinder Village).'
A correspondent in 2014 advises that John Edwards and Yram Allets (Stella Mary Edwards) were active in Cornwall in the early 1970s. He provides an address for the couple in 1973 at Edwards Studio 70, Lanhams, High Street, St Ives. The actual number for the building is 9, which is currently occupied by an estate agent.
2015: A new correspondent writes: `I have a palette knife oil painting of china clay heaps, pond, cottages, and road which was bought in Exeter in 1965 as a 21st birthday present for me by my father, at a cost of £25. I still like it very much. I also inherited a small oil of Tintagel, looking out to sea with the castle in the background.'
