Tamsyn Williams was born in Redruth. She undertook a foundation course at Plymouth School of Art from 1976 to 1977. Subsequently she studied History of Art and English Literature, and obtained an MA and PhD from the Courtauld Institute.

She returned to Cornwall in 1986, to live and work in St Ives.
